Mr. Hechler definitely had some really important information to give us. I really learned the difference between memory and storage, as well as some of the differences between Macs and PCs. The articles on today's class links provided some really good information about how we should construct our Power Points. After reviewing the links, the five things I think are important are:

1. Use of words: I really don't like it when people cram a bunch of words on a PowerPoint.
2. Graphics: I think graphics are important to catch a viewer's attention, but when there are pictures, noises, and words all over the place, it can be a little distracting.
3. Simplicity: I definitely agree with the articles that express keeping your PowerPoint relatively simple. The presentation is about you, not your PowerPoint.
4. Color: When the color choices burn the back of my retinas, I stop paying attention.
5. Templates: I agree with many of the articles when they say don't use PowerPoint templates. Designing your own slides can allow you to put a personal spin on your presentation.

I'm in the Pre-medicine program at Trinity and I will most likely do my presentation on an important part of the human body. Right now I'm thinking about doing the cardiovascular system.

New Ways to Use Google!

Hello everyone!

The mother in the article assigned for class seems to have a valid point on the unauthorized use of her son's photo. I would be surprised to find my picture used in a magazine without my permission as well. Using the FACE website from the copyright lecture, I found that almost any image found on the Internet is probably under copyright. Even if the mother's photograph was could not be found having a copyright, I think that the publisher should have still contacted her to ask permission.

I was incredibly surprised when Mr. Nolan showed all the bells and whistles you could use when searching with Google. I did not know about Google scholar, and that bit of information will be so useful to me throughout my time in college. I learned much about how to tell if a site is trustworthy and if the information is reliable.

Thanks for reading my blog!

Danielle

PowerPoint

I really enjoyed the comedy video on how not to use a PowerPoint. Everything this guy says is totally true and his remarks back up what Dr. Semmes says about keeping our work simple.

I have realized that I have not made a PowerPoint presentation in quite a long time, but I will pay attention to some of these pointers next time I have to make one.

Many of my instructors use PowerPoint presentations in my lecture classes. However, the PowerPoint presentations do not always help me because there seems to be so much information on them that I feel overwhelmed. Some of my instructors use PowerPoint quite effectively. For example, my psychology professor has really simple slides, but they help to trigger many of the explanations he gives us in class.

I really think that simple PowerPoint presentations are effective.

Danielle

Microsoft Word 2007

Welcome back to my blog!

Microsoft Word 2007 is still pretty new to me. At first, I thought Word 2007 was very confusing because some of the buttons are in different places. I was really used to using Word 2003 and Word 2007 is quite a bit different. However, last semester forced me to use Word 2007 frequently, so I learned the workings of Word mostly through trial and error.

Now, I can proudly say that I can type a pretty simple document using word, but I'm sure there are many other neat tricks and tips that I can learn.

Danielle

Computers, Computers, Computers...

Hey there!

Thanks for checking out my blog. I would have to say that my computer experience is about average. I know enough to navigate my way around the computer and the Internet, but there is still much that I could learn. My current computer is a Dell Laptop which I received as a graduation present. It is a pretty neat little thing and very dependable.

I think that what I will learn from this class is going to be very helpful throughout the remainder of my academic career as well as in my life outside of academics. Putting together an awesome PowerPoint presentation is one of the many skills in life which may come in handy one day. As for me, I would like to learn more about how to use Microsoft Office 2007. Microsoft Excel has long haunted me as a scary and intimidating program, but I know that after this semester I will most likely conquer the monster.

I am so proud of myself in that I mapped all the network drives on my computer in the residence hall all by myself. I noticed that my computer runs a little more slowly when engaging with the other network drives, but it must be due to the enormous amount of information stored in those network drives.

Well, looks like this blog is done. Stay tuned!

Danielle

First Blog Ever!

Well, here is my goofy video:

<embed src="http://www.youtube.com/get_player" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"width="320" height="266" bgcolor="#FFFFFF"flashvars="flvurl=http://v1.nonxt2.googlevideo.com/videoplayback?id%3D20d6176a3ebe960e%26itag%3D5%26app%3Dblogger%26ip%3D0.0.0.0%26ipbits%3D0%26expire%3D1329950757%26sparams%3Did,itag,ip,ipbits,expire%26signature%3DE59F7F360578DFF226AC903FC8B53C753635428.4FED7761A76B3E34E06F5330EDCD05F5B835CF2D%26key%3Dck1&iurl=http://video.google.com/ThumbnailServer2?app%3Dblogger%26contentid%3D20d6176a3ebe960e%26offsetms%3D5000%26itag%3Dw160%26sigh%3DamoHYdY0PmQhfk1n2HrrSMWEoS8&autoplay=0&ps=blogger"allowFullScreen="true" />

As mentioned in the video above, my name is Danielle Ortega. I am 19 years old and a first year student at Trinity University. I graduated from O'Connor High School, located on San Antonio's northwest side. I played varsity soccer my junior and senior years at O'Connor, but I had been playing club soccer since I was in first grade. When I was 14 years old, I hurt my knee during a soccer game and I had to have surgery. It took me nine months to rehabilitate and begin playing soccer again. I do not play soccer anymore for club, but I still enjoy running and being active.

My family is pretty crazy. I have two younger brothers and two younger sisters. Karlie, my 15 year old sister, plays volleyball for a very prestigious club team and she is an awesome volleyball player. My brother Drew, 14 years old, plays for the freshmen basketball team at O'Connor. Travis, 12, is video game crazy and loves to play Halo 3 on his new X Box 360. Zoe, my youngest sister, is trying to follow in Karlie's footsteps and she plays volleyball as well. My dad is a Family Practice Physician and my mom works at the elementary school my youngest sister attends. I have a boyfriend, named Aaron, who is the most hilarious guy I know.

I love college so far, although my first semester classes were really difficult.

I'm sure there will be many more blogs this semester so stay tuned!

Danielle
